Our Programs
Research and Evaluation:
The Institute’s research foci is intended to integrate theory
and research in a manner that is meaningful for policymakers and
operational personnel. Current research projects this year are
focused on juvenile offending.
A Roundtable and Workshop Series is also offered
Technical Assistance:
Consistent with our focus to strengthen the capacity of citizens
and agencies to respond to crime, the Institute is providing Technical
Assistance to several non-profit community-based youth service
providers in the District of Columbia.
The Institute also has a collaborative partnership with the Office
of Youth Violence (Metropolitan Police Department) in examining
causes of violent crime by young persons and effective prevention
and intervention strategies.
The Institute for Public Safety and Justice seeks to meet the
training needs of criminal justice agencies. To this end, it
has the capacity to provide an analysis of the agency’s
training needs and to design a program to meet those specific
needs
Technology Training Programs:
State-of-the art computer-based training in G.I.S. Geographic
Information Systems utilizes crime mapping to facilitate a spatial
analysis of the factors relating to criminal activity and its
impact in the District of Columbia. Research, program planning/modeling
and simulations are also offered by the Institute.
Distance Learning Capabilities:
The Institute for Public Safety & Justice is currently developing
the infra-structure to support a strong distance learning capacity.
This will enhance the ability of law enforcement officers to
combine constantly changing shifts with their academic classes.
In addition, it offers an ability to inmates who were previously
incarcerated at Lorton and are now scattered throughout the
country, who will one day return to our city. Pilot testing
is currently underway.
